Autumn in the Beskydy peaks with colour from mid-October to early November, when the beeches and larches above Rožnov turn orange and gold. There are far fewer tourists than in summer, you can reach the ridge and the viewpoints in 20 to 30 minutes, and in the evening you can warm up with us in the café or the sauna.

When are the autumn colours at their best in the Beskydy?

They are usually at their finest roughly from mid-October to early November, though the exact timing shifts each year with the weather. The colours catch the valleys around the Bečva first, while higher on the ridges above 1,000 metres the turn comes a little later. In the morning, mist often drifts through the valley, and during the day the sky clears and the forests light up.

Before you set out, keep in mind that:

  • the colours peak roughly from mid-October to early November,
  • the ridge tends to be a few degrees colder and windier than down in Rožnov,
  • the days are getting shorter, so plan a longer hike for the morning.

Bring layers of clothing and a waterproof jacket, as the weather on the ridge changes faster than in the valley.

Where to go for autumn viewpoints and ridge walks around Rožnov?

You do not have to go far for colourful views. Within a 30-minute drive of the penzion, you can choose to suit your mood and the weather:

We covered the routes in more detail in our articles on Pustevny and Radhošť and the most beautiful lookout towers. In clear weather, set out in the morning, as the car park below Pustevny fills up quickly even outside summer. If you would rather not climb on foot, you can ride up to Pustevny on the chairlift from Trojanovice.

Where and how to pick mushrooms in the Beskydy in autumn?

The Beskydy forests tend to be generous with mushrooms, especially a few days after heavy rain, once it warms up. Here in Wallachia, we hold to a few simple rules:

  • pick only what you can safely identify, and if in doubt, leave the mushroom to grow,
  • cut the mushrooms or gently twist them out so you do not damage the mycelium,
  • carry a basket instead of a plastic bag, so the spores can keep falling along the way,
  • walk considerately and tidy up after yourself in the forest, even what you did not bring.

When you get back, we are happy to suggest where to head tomorrow and where things are growing nearby right now.

What to do in autumn in the Beskydy when it rains?

Autumn weather can be changeable, but you will not run out of things to do. The Wallachian Open-Air Museum, the skanzen, is a few minutes on foot from us, and part of the exhibition is under cover, so you can walk through the wooden cottages even in the rain. We wrote more about it in our guide to the open-air museum.

When you would rather not go out at all, take a seat with us at Anděl café. We are open daily from 11:00 to 20:00, and speciality coffee from the QB roastery, hot drinks and homemade cakes await you, including vegan, gluten-free and lactose-free options. The children can play in the meantime in the cosy children’s corner.

How to combine autumn trips with a stay at penzion Anděl?

A tried-and-tested autumn day with us looks like this:

  1. In the morning, head out for the colours on the ridge or for mushrooms.
  2. Around midday, lunch in town and a short rest.
  3. In the afternoon, coffee and a homemade cake at the café.
  4. In the evening, the private sauna and a quiet night in your room.

Cool evenings are made for our private sauna: a Finnish sauna and a cool-down pool for just 2 to 4 people, 1,000 Kč for 120 minutes, with the last entry at 18:00. It will reliably warm up a body chilled by the rain.

“Autumn with us is not rushed: forest and colours in the morning, cake at the café in the afternoon, the sauna and a quiet night in the evening.”

You can stay in one of our nine rooms from 2,000 to 2,700 Kč per room for two people per night, with breakfast and parking at the property included. Does a quiet autumn in the Beskydy appeal to you?
