The Wallachian Open-Air Museum in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm is the largest open-air museum in Central Europe, divided into three areas: the Wooden Town, the Wallachian Village and the Mill Valley. Allow half a day to a full day for an unhurried visit. From Anděl penzion you can walk to the gate in just a few minutes and leave the car parked.

What is the Wallachian Open-Air Museum?

The open-air museum in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm isn’t a classic museum with display cases. You walk among real timber cottages, little churches and farm buildings that were moved here piece by piece from all over Wallachia and rebuilt on site. In many spots you’ll meet craftspeople in period dress, catch the smell of woodsmoke from a stove, and hear a mill turning. It’s more of a full day’s walk through a living village than a quick stop, and that’s exactly its charm. Come ready for several hours of walking outdoors.

What are the three areas of the museum?

The museum consists of three separate areas, each with its own atmosphere. It’s worth knowing what to expect in advance so you can plan your time around what interests you most.

  • Wooden Town is the historic core right in the centre of Rožnov. You’ll find a wooden church, the town hall and burgher cottages around the square. Most festivities, markets and concerts are held here, so it tends to be the liveliest and the easiest to reach.
  • Wallachian Village is a sprawling hillside area with homesteads, small fields and farm animals. It shows how people in Wallachia really lived and farmed. Children love the goats, sheep and horses, and there’s by far the most room to walk around.
  • Mill Valley sits on the water. The mill, sawmill and other technical buildings are working structures, powered by a millrace. It’s the smallest of the three areas but the most interesting for anyone into old crafts and technology.

How much time should you allow for the museum?

It depends on how much you want to see. As a rough guide:

  • Just the Wooden Town can comfortably be done in 1.5 to 2 hours.
  • All three areas will take half a day to a full day, mainly because of the size of the Wallachian Village on its hillside.

With children and in good weather, feel free to plan for a full day, there’s plenty of room to run around and things to discover. If you’re short on time, prioritise the Wooden Town. It’s closest to the centre and to our penzion, and gives you the most complete impression in the shortest time.

What happens at the museum throughout the year?

The museum is alive all year round and its programme changes with the seasons. Here’s what to expect in each:

  • Spring: Easter customs, markets and the first warm days among the timber cottages.
  • Summer: folklore festivals and open-air concerts.
  • Autumn: harvest festivals and craft events, plus colourful hills all around.
  • Winter: Advent and Christmas programmes in the snow-covered cottages.

Since the programme and opening hours change, and admission varies by season and by the number of areas you visit, check the current information directly with the museum so nothing catches you by surprise on the day. Around holidays and major festivities it gets busy, so it’s worth arriving early.

When and how should you plan your visit?

A few local tips to make your visit easier:

  • Head out in the morning so you have time to relax through all three areas and still fit in lunch.
  • Wear comfortable shoes, the Wallachian Village is on a slope and involves a lot of walking.
  • On warm days, bring water and a hat, there’s little shade among the cottages.
  • Check admission prices and opening hours in advance, they vary by season and area.
