Wallachian Open-Air Museum: The Skanzen in Rožnov

Timber cottages at the Wallachian Open-Air Museum (skanzen) in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm

The Wallachian Open-Air Museum is the heart of Rožnov and the first place we send our guests. It is the largest open-air museum in Central Europe, and you can walk there from the penzion. Here is what awaits you and how to plan your visit.

What is the Wallachian Open-Air Museum?

The open-air museum in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm preserves folk architecture and the way of life in Wallachia. Instead of a static museum, you walk among real timber cottages, little churches and farm buildings, often with craft demonstrations and a live programme. The museum is divided into three areas, each with its own atmosphere.

The three areas of the museum

  • Wooden Town — the historic core of the museum right in the centre of Rožnov. Here you will find the Rožnov church, the town hall and burgher buildings. This is where festivities and concerts are most often held.
  • Wallachian Village — a sprawling area on a hillside with homesteads, small fields and farm animals. It shows how people really lived and farmed in Wallachia.
  • Mill Valley — an area with working water-powered structures: a mill, a sawmill and other technical monuments driven by water.

How much time should you allow?

It depends on how much you want to see:

  • Just the Wooden Town — you can manage it in 1.5 to 2 hours.
  • The whole museum — count on half a day to a full day, mainly because of the size of the Wallachian Village.

With children and in fine weather, feel free to plan for a full day — there is plenty of room to run around and things to discover.

Year-round programme

The museum is alive all year. It changes with the seasons:

  • Spring — Easter customs and markets.
  • Summer — folklore festivals and concerts.
  • Autumn — harvest festivals and craft events, plus the beautiful colours of the surrounding hills.
  • Winter — Advent and Christmas programmes in the snow-covered cottages.

Because the programme and opening hours change, check the museum’s current information before your visit. I also recommend checking admission — it varies by season and by the number of areas you visit.

Practical visiting tips

  • Bring comfortable shoes — the Wallachian Village in particular is on a slope and involves a lot of walking.
  • Go in the morning so you have time for all three areas.
  • After your visit, stop by our café for speciality coffee and a homemade cake — it is just a short walk from the museum.
