When is the best time to head to the Beskydy? Honestly, any time works, just pick your visit around the weather that rules here at the moment: May to August for hikes and long days, December to March for snow and skiing, spring and autumn for calm without the crowds. One thing holds true all year round though: mountain weather changes by the hour, so pack layers and a rain jacket and nothing will catch you off guard.
What is the weather like in the Beskydy by month?
You can find good weather in the Beskydy all year round, just something different each time. Summer is best for hikes, winter for skiing, and spring and autumn for calm wandering. Here is a quick overview of what to expect each month, and why it is worth coming then:
| Month | Weather to expect | What to come for |
|---|---|---|
| January–February | frost, snow, short days | skiing, cross-country skiing, sauna |
| March | thaw, changeable, muddy paths | calm and lower prices |
| April | first warm days, showers | first hikes, nature budding |
| May | greenery, longer days, occasional rain | hikes without the crowds |
| June–August | warmth, afternoon storms | hikes, cycling, swimming |
| September | warm days, cool mornings | hikes, mushroom picking, calm |
| October | colours, morning mist | walks and photography |
| November | grey, damp, cold | wellness and the café |
| December | frost, first snow, Advent | skiing and festive mood |
The most stable weather runs from late spring to the end of summer, roughly May to August. March and November, on the other hand, are transitional months, when it tends to be raw and damp outside, but the guesthouse is calm and prices are at their lowest. Take the numbers on the thermometer with a grain of salt: it tends to be warmer down in the valley near Rožnov than up on the ridges where you will be hiking, and the gap between morning and afternoon can easily top ten degrees. That is why we wear layers here even in summer.
When to head out for hikes, and when for skiing?
Summer, meaning June to August, is the main season for the mountains. The days are long, the warmth draws you up to the ridges, and the Bečva cycle path runs right past the guesthouse. What to expect:
- Best for hikes: Radhošť, Pustevny and Velký Javorník are all within easy reach.
- Afternoon storms: they like to build up in the heat, so plan the harder routes for the morning.
- The most people: trails get busier at weekends and during the school holidays, so head out early in the morning.
For more specific routes, see our article on things to do around Rožnov. December to March, on the other hand, is all about snow. The Beskydy are among the snowier Czech mountains, and snow usually lasts here the whole winter, though conditions do vary from year to year. It is good for skiing, cross-country skiing and walks through the snowy landscape, and in the evening, after the frost, the sauna warms you right back up. Check the current snow conditions before you set off, so you know whether to pack skis or rather walking boots. Where to head for the slopes and what to bring, we cover in the article winter in the Beskydy and skiing.
Is it worth coming off-season?
This is our tip for anyone who is not fond of crowds. In our view, the turn of April and May and the whole of September are the loveliest of all:
- Nature is at its most beautiful: everything buds in spring, and the colours blaze in autumn.
- Fewer people: both the trails and the town feel calm.
- Lower prices outside the main season, and more privacy.
“The Beskydy look their best to us at the turn of April and May and throughout September, fewer people, full colour, and a calm you simply will not find in summer.”
The weather is changeable in these months, but that only makes the stay more authentic. Fog in the morning, sun at midday, a shower by evening, easily all in a single day.
What to do in the Beskydy when it rains?
Rain in the mountains comes with the territory, and it does not have to ruin your day. With us you have several plan Bs under one roof:
- Private sauna: Finnish-style, just for your group of 2 to 4 people, 1,000 Kč for 120 minutes, robes and prosecco included. Book at least 2 hours ahead on 602 541 112, last entry is at 18:00.
- Café: specialty coffee and homemade cakes, including vegan and gluten-free options, daily from 11:00 to 20:00.
- Open-air museum, a few minutes on foot: the Wallachian Open Air Museum, the largest of its kind in Central Europe, you can still walk around it in light rain.
You can arrange a massage with Lenka on top of all that, and a rainy day suddenly becomes the most pleasant one.
What to pack so the weather does not catch you off guard?
Whenever you come, three things always belong in your backpack: layers, a rain jacket and sturdy shoes. It gets cool in the mountains even in summer, especially in the morning and evening, and a shower can appear out of a clear sky. A hat and a light jacket take up hardly any extra room in your bag, but they can save your day on the ridge. You will find the complete season-by-season list in our checklist of what to pack for the Beskydy.
So when should you finally come?
The short answer: any time, just dress in layers and pack a rain jacket. You will find the longer answer above, pick your month based on whether you want hikes, skiing or calm without the crowds. Whatever you choose, our rooms at 2,000 to 2,700 Kč a night with breakfast, and the private sauna, run all year round.
