What to Pack for the Beskydy Mountains: A Practical Checklist

Beskydy nature around Penzion Anděl — landscape for hikes and walks

In the Beskydy, the weather can flip from ‘sunny skies’ to ‘pouring rain and wind’ over the course of a single morning. That is why it pays to pack smart — not to overstuff your suitcase, but not to be caught off guard either. Here is our practical checklist from the locals, organised so it actually makes sense.

What to bring always, regardless of season

This belongs in your backpack every time:

  • Layers of clothing — a T-shirt, a sweatshirt, a jacket. Add or remove layers as the weather changes.
  • A rain jacket or waterproof shell — even when the morning is sunny.
  • Sturdy footwear with a profiled sole, ideally ankle-high.
  • A daypack, a water bottle, a snack.
  • A charger and a power bank — your phone with the map drains fast on a hike.
  • Swimwear and flip-flops for wellness.

Winter (December–March)

Winter is beautiful, but cold and often slippery. Add:

  • A thermal layer (base layer) and warm socks.
  • A hat, gloves and a neck gaiter.
  • Waterproof winter footwear with a good sole.
  • Sunscreen — snow reflects more sun than you would expect.
  • If you ski, check out winter in the Beskydy and skiing and pack your gear accordingly.

Summer (June–August)

In summer, the main thing is protection from sun and insects:

  • A hat or cap, sunglasses, sunscreen.
  • Insect repellent — needed in the forest and by the water.
  • A light jacket for the evening — mountain evenings cool down even in summer.
  • Plenty of water — you will drink more on a hike than you think.

Spring and autumn (the transitional seasons)

The most changeable weather of all. The rule is: bring layers and prepare for anything.

  • Water-resistant footwear — it tends to be muddy.
  • A jacket and a lighter sweatshirt — temperatures swing a lot during the day.
  • A rain jacket, mandatory.

When the best time to set off is, we cover separately — take a look at the weather in the Beskydy and when to come.

For wellness and relaxation

If you are planning a sauna as part of your stay (and we recommend it), pack swimwear and flip-flops. Robes and towels are provided — our private sauna costs 1000 Kč for 120 minutes, is just for your group of 2–4 people, and is booked at least 2 hours ahead on 602 541 112 (last entry at 18:00).

What you do not need to worry about

A few things you can leave at home with peace of mind:

  • Breakfast — it is included in the room price (2000–2700 Kč per night, see our rooms).
  • Towels and toiletries — they are in the room.
  • The stress of planning — we are happy to advise on trips and the weather.

All packed? Then head off to the Beskydy. If you do not yet have a place to stay, book your stay with us — and we will take care of the sauna and the calm.

Frequently asked questions

What shoes should I bring to the Beskydy?

Sturdy shoes with a profiled sole, ideally ankle-high. The terrain tends to be damp and rocky even on marked trails. For longer hikes (Radhošť, Pustevny) trainers are not enough.

Should I expect rain even in summer?

Yes. It rains more often in the mountains and the weather changes quickly. A light rain jacket or waterproof shell belongs in your backpack at all times, even when the morning is sunny.

Should I bring my own towels and sauna gear?

For our private sauna you get robes and towels included in the price (1000 Kč / 120 minutes). Your own swimwear and flip-flops do come in handy, though. Book the sauna at least 2 hours ahead on 602 541 112.

Do I need to bring food for breakfast?

No. Breakfast is included in the room price. For a hike, though, pack a snack and plenty of water — you will not find refreshments on every corner in the mountains.
