Frenštát pod Radhoštěm is about 15 km from Penzion Anděl in Rožnov, and you’ll get there by car in roughly 20 minutes. It is the nearest gateway to the loveliest part of the Beskydy Mountains: from here, or more precisely from Trojanovice just past the town, you take the cable car up to Pustevny and continue along the ridge to Radhošť. In Frenštát itself you will find a handsome square, a museum and cafés.
How far is Frenštát pod Radhoštěm from Rožnov?
From Penzion Anděl it is only about 15 km to Frenštát, and by car you’re there comfortably in 20 minutes. Anyone who would rather not drive can take the train or bus instead, with no need to worry about parking in the mountains. That makes Frenštát an ideal starting point: head into the hills in the morning and return to us in Rožnov for a relaxed dinner in the evening.
In short, why it makes a good starting point:
- about 15 km from Penzion Anděl, roughly 20 minutes by car,
- you can also get there by train or bus, with connections running several times a day,
- the lower station of the cable car to Pustevny in Trojanovice is just a few minutes from Frenštát.
Where does the cable car to Pustevny depart from, and what awaits at the top?
The biggest draw is the chairlift from Trojanovice to Pustevny. The lower station is just past Frenštát, and it will carry you up in a few minutes, saving you a good stretch of climbing. It’s especially handy with younger children, or on days when you’re not in the mood for a full day of hiking.
What awaits you at the top:
- the Art Nouveau buildings Libušín and Maměnka by architect Dušan Jurkovič, a national cultural monument,
- an easy ridge walk to Radhošť, about 4 km long, which takes an hour to an hour and a half one way,
- along the ridge, a statue of the pagan god Radegast, and at the summit of Radhošť (1,129 m) a chapel of Saints Cyril and Methodius,
- views across the whole of the Beskydy Mountains and far into the region.
The cable car fare runs in the order of tens to lower hundreds of crowns, depending on direction and ticket type. It’s best to check the current price list and opening hours before you set off, as they change with the season. We cover the whole hike step by step in our article on the Pustevny and Radhošť hike.
What to see in Frenštát pod Radhoštěm itself?
The town itself is worth a stop too, especially on your way down from the mountains:
- Míru Square with its arcades and church, a peaceful spot for a stroll,
- the Frenštát museum, devoted to the mountains, skiing and local history, a good choice even in the rain,
- cafés and patisseries on the square, where you can grab a bite before or after your hike.
Frenštát has long been tied to the mountains and skiing, so even a few hours in town have their own charm. If you’re travelling with children, you’ll appreciate that you can park easily near the square and stroll around without any rush.
How to plan a full day from Penzion Anděl?
The classic, easygoing version looks like this: you set off from us in the morning, hop on the cable car near Trojanovice, cross the ridge to Radhošť and back, stop in Frenštát for a coffee in the afternoon, and reach us again in the evening. Here’s an idea of how to lay out the day:
| Time | Plan | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 9:00 | leave Penzion Anděl | ~20 minutes by car to Trojanovice |
| 9:30 | cable car up to Pustevny | saves you a stretch of climbing |
| 10:00 | Libušín, Maměnka and the start of the ridge walk | Art Nouveau buildings by Jurkovič |
| 11:30 | summit of Radhošť, Radegast and the chapel | 1,129 m, views across the region |
| 13:00 | back to Pustevny, lunch | |
| 14:30 | stop in Frenštát, the square and a café | |
| 16:30 | return to Penzion Anděl | private sauna in the evening |
Take the timings as a rough guide, the ridge walk isn’t a race. Sturdy footwear is a good idea for the climb, and it’s worth checking the cable car schedule in advance, as it may not run outside the season. After a day in the mountains, a private sauna will do you good, which you can book with us in advance for 1,000 CZK for 120 minutes for two to four people.
“Think of Frenštát as a springboard: you park, ride the cable car up, and within minutes you’re standing on the ridge. In the evening you’re back with us for coffee.”
Where to go in Frenštát in bad weather?
When it rains, save the mountains for a nicer day and make the most of the town instead. The museum in Frenštát is worthwhile, along with a walk under the covered arcades on Míru Square and a sit-down in one of the local cafés or patisseries. Back in Rožnov, you can take shelter with us in the café: we serve specialty coffee and homemade cakes, including vegan and gluten-free options, daily from 11:00 to 20:00.
