Vsetín is about 20 km from Penzion Anděl, and you can get there in 30 minutes by car along the Bečva river. The town centre is dominated by the Renaissance Vsetín Chateau with the Museum of the Wallachia Region, and the surroundings invite you to walk or cycle through the Bečva valley. It makes for a relaxed half-day or full-day trip that you can enjoy even outside the main season.

I love Vsetín for how it combines culture at the chateau with being active outdoors in the valley, all in one day. Here is how to plan your trip so the day goes smoothly.

How far is Vsetín from Penzion Anděl?

From Anděl it is about 20 km to Vsetín, and by car you are there in 30 minutes, along a lovely route beside the river. If you would rather not drive, you can also get there by train or bus via Valašské Meziříčí. The station and bus stops in Vsetín are a short distance from the centre, so you can walk to the chateau in just a few minutes.

A few practical tips for the journey:

  • by car: parking is available in the centre and near the chateau, the drive takes roughly 30 minutes,
  • by train and bus: connections run via Valašské Meziříčí, handy if you fancy a drink in town along the way,
  • by bike: more confident cyclists can ride through the valley along the Bečva cycle path.

Valašské Meziříčí is right on the way, so you can easily combine the two trips. I have written up tips in the article Valašské Meziříčí: what to see.

What do the Vsetín Chateau and the Museum of the Wallachia Region offer?

The town centre is dominated by the Renaissance Vsetín Chateau, now home to the Museum of the Wallachia Region. It is the main stop of the trip, and a good shelter on a rainy day too. Inside you will find:

  • displays on the history and nature of Wallachia,
  • seasonal exhibitions and cultural events,
  • a pleasant courtyard and chateau grounds for a stroll.

Admission runs in the order of tens of crowns, with a discount for children, so it will not strain the family budget. It is best to check the opening hours and exhibition programme in advance, especially outside the main season and on Mondays, when museums are often closed. Allow roughly 1.5 to 2 hours for a visit to the chateau and museum.

Where to head in the Bečva valley and around?

Vsetín lies in the valley of the Bečva river between the Wallachian hills, and the surroundings positively invite you to move. If you want to stretch your legs without a demanding mountain climb, you can choose from:

  • an easy walk or bike ride along the river on the Bečva cycle path,
  • a climb up one of the surrounding hills and lookout towers with views of Wallachia,
  • marked trails into the landscape of meadows and scattered cottages towards the Vsetín highlands.

The flat stretch along the river is comfortable even with a pushchair or small children, while the hills reward those who fancy a bit of climbing with a view. You can choose anything from a short one-hour walk to a half-day loop.

How to plan a day in Vsetín?

To help your day run smoothly, here is a tried-and-tested plan that combines the chateau with a walk:

Part of the dayProgrammeTime needed
MorningVsetín Chateau and the Museum of the Wallachia Region1.5 to 2 hours
MiddayLunch and coffee in the town centreabout 1 hour
AfternoonWalk or bike ride through the Bečva valley2 to 3 hours
Early eveningBack to Anděl, cake at the café or the saunaas you fancy

You can comfortably cover the whole town and a stretch of the valley in half a day to a full day. I recommend this trip especially in spring and autumn, when the Beskydy ridges are still damp, and as a calmer day between more demanding hikes to Pustevny or Radhošť.

“Vsetín is our tip for a day when it is raining in the mountains: the chateau and museum in the morning, a walk through the valley in the afternoon, and a warm cake at our café in the evening.”

How to combine Vsetín with a stay at Penzion Anděl?

After a day outdoors, a warm specialty coffee and homemade cake at our café will hit the spot, open daily from 11:00 to 20:00. If you want to truly unwind, book the private sauna in advance: 120 minutes for two to four people costs 1,000 CZK, including a carafe of water and prosecco.

Planning a stay in Wallachia? Take a look at our rooms, where a night for two starts at 2,000 CZK with breakfast and parking included, and book your dates through reservations or call +420 602 541 112. I am happy to give you tailored tips depending on the weather and your mood, and you will find more in the article trip ideas from Rožnov. We look forward to welcoming you at Penzion Anděl.
