ideal length of the trip
Štramberk lies about 30 km from Penzion Anděl, a 30 to 35 minute drive from Rožnov pod Radhoštěm. It offers a cylindrical Trúba tower with views over all of Wallachia, a historic square with cobbled lanes, and the sweet scent of fresh Štramberk Ears. Half a day is enough for a relaxed visit, or make it a full day with children or paired with Kopřivnice.
How far is Štramberk, and how do you get there from the guesthouse?
From Penzion Anděl it is about 30 km to Štramberk. By car you cover it comfortably in 30 to 35 minutes, heading via Frenštát pod Radhoštěm and Kopřivnice. You can park in the car park below the historic centre, from where a short but brisk uphill walk takes you to the square.
Without a car, you can reach Štramberk by bus via Kopřivnice, though allow for a longer journey with a change. For a full-day trip, and especially with children, a car is by far the most convenient option. Parking at the guesthouse is included in the price of your stay, so you can set off in the morning without worrying about where to leave the car.
What awaits you at the Trúba tower?
The landmark of Štramberk is the cylindrical Trúba tower, the only surviving remnant of the medieval castle above the town. The climb up is a reward in itself:
- admission is around 60 Kč for an adult and around 40 Kč for a child,
- on a clear day, from the gallery you can see the Beskydy ridges, Radhošť and Lysá hora,
- a stone staircase leads up, so sturdier shoes come in handy.
Opening hours are seasonal. In summer the tower is usually open daily; outside the main season, it is best to check the current times in advance so you do not find yourself in front of a locked gate.
“Climb up to the Trúba gallery and you will have all of Wallachia laid out before you: Radhošť, Lysá hora, and the rooftops of Štramberk below.”
Where can you taste real Štramberk Ears?
Štramberk Ears are traditional gingerbread cones made from honey dough, carrying a protected geographical indication. They are baked to an old recipe and rolled into their ear shape while still warm. The best place to buy them fresh is straight from the bakeries on the square; pick up a few to take with you, they go wonderfully with coffee.
If you would rather save the coffee and cake for after you get back, our café is waiting for you: specialty coffee from the QB roastery and homemade cakes, including gluten-free, lactose-free and vegan options. We are open daily from 11:00 to 20:00.
What can you fit in at Štramberk with children?
Štramberk is fun for younger visitors too. You can easily spend a whole afternoon around the tower and the ramparts:
- the Šipka cave, just above the town, where traces of prehistoric settlement were found,
- the archaeopark, where children get a hands-on sense of life here in prehistoric times,
- the National Garden and the scenic paths along the ramparts,
- a walk through the lanes of the old Dolní Báň quarter, known as the Štramberk Nativity.
The paths run uphill in places, so bring comfortable shoes for the children and yourself, plus something to drink. This rough guide will help you plan how much time to allow for each stop:
| Stop | What is there | How much time |
|---|---|---|
| Trúba tower | Views of the Beskydy, Radhošť and Lysá hora | 30 to 45 minutes |
| Square and bakeries | Štramberk Ears and small cafés | around 30 minutes |
| Šipka cave | World-famous prehistoric find | 30 to 45 minutes |
| Archaeopark | A glimpse of prehistoric settlement | around 45 minutes |
| National Garden and Nativity | Scenic lanes around the ramparts | 45 to 60 minutes |
These times are only a guide; with small children, allow more time for everything.
