Staying a few minutes on foot from the skanzen brings one big advantage: you can leave the car parked and walk to the gate of the Wallachian Open-Air Museum on your own two feet. Penzion Anděl sits in a calm spot by the river on the edge of Rožnov pod Radhoštěm, just a few minutes on foot from the entrance. In the morning you head off to explore, in the evening you return to coffee, cake and calm.

What is it like to stay a few minutes on foot from the skanzen?

The biggest charm is that the museum feels almost like your own back garden. After breakfast, included in the room price, you set off from the guesthouse and within a few minutes you are standing at the skanzen entrance. You do not have to hunt for parking in the centre or keep an eye on the clock, the car stays at the guesthouse, where you park for free.

If rain or tiredness catches up with you at the museum, it is no trouble to head back for a while, drop off your shopping, let the children catch their breath and set off again. That feeling of having everything within reach is something accommodation on the other side of town simply cannot offer. And because check-in is from 14:00 and check-out by 10:00, you can fit in part of the skanzen even on the day you arrive or leave. We are a family guesthouse with 9 rooms, so it stays calm here even after a demanding day on your feet.

“In the morning only a few minutes on foot separate you from the skanzen, so why start the car at all. Enjoy the day on your own two feet and return to the calm by the river in the evening.”

How do you get from the guesthouse to the skanzen?

The walk is simple and pleasant. It leads from the calm part of town by the river towards the museum, and you can cover it in a few minutes on foot, comfortably even with children or a pushchair. You leave the car in the free parking at the guesthouse, so you do not have to fight for a spot in the centre.

The Wooden Town, the main part of the skanzen right in the centre of Rožnov, is the first area you reach. The Wallachian Village and Mill Valley are then a little further into the grounds. Thanks to that closeness, you can split the day into stages and stop back with us in between, for lunch or coffee, say.

What can you fit in at the skanzen?

The Wallachian Open-Air Museum is the largest open-air museum in Central Europe and is divided into three areas:

  • Wooden Town, the historic core right in the centre, takes roughly 1.5 to 2 hours to walk through.
  • Wallachian Village, a sprawling area on a hillside with homesteads and farm animals, this is where you will spend the most time.
  • Mill Valley, with working water-powered structures, a mill and a sawmill.

Allow half a day to a full day for the whole skanzen. Wear comfortable shoes, the Wallachian Village especially is on a slope, and it is best to set off in the morning. When you are staying a few minutes on foot away, you can calmly split the visit: one area in the morning, another in the afternoon after a rest. You will find a detailed guide to the museum, including its year-round programme, in our article on the Wallachian Open-Air Museum.

What to do nearby if you have more days?

Rožnov is an ideal base for trips around the Beskydy, and the skanzen is easy to combine with them. A few tips on where to head:

  • The Jurkovič Tower, above the town with a view of the surrounding ridges.
  • Pustevny and Radhošť, the heart of the Beskydy, a short drive from Rožnov.
  • The Bečva cycle path, for a calm bike ride or a walk.

We have gathered more ideas on our things to do page. Wherever you head off to, in the evening you will return to the calm by the river, a few minutes from the skanzen.
